After releasing students into seat work teachers will often move immediately. Students see a teacher’s movement and respond by not going on task. In this skill we ask teachers to remain still for 20 seconds after releasing students into seat work, eyes scanning the room. The teacher is unavailable for questions during this time. Most of the students, in the space of 20 seconds, will give up waiting and go on task independently. After 20 seconds the teacher then moves to help but usually finds that most students have already gone on task.
