Management during the seat work portion of a lesson usually consists of a teacher moving near the misbehaving student, waiting for them to stop the “off task” behavior, and then leaving. In reality the student holds their breath as the teacher approaches, stops the offending behavior, but then as the teacher leaves, breathes and goes back to being “off task”. This skill helps teachers shift students from OFF task, through Neutral (student holding his/her breath) to ON task by training them to 1) approach the student from the side, 2) point and look at the student’s work, 3) wait until the student breathes twice and goes ON task, and 3) leave from behind.

Sari de la Motte, who has been described as a “guru of the unspoken,” is the CEO and founder of Nonverbal Solutions, whose motto is Go Beyond Words.
“As a new teacher, I’ve benefited greatly from Sari’s mentoring. For more than dispensing information, she actively helps me implement practical ideas through observation and follow-up.”
